minus

minus
minus
in the meaning ‘lacking, without’, has been used informally since the mid-19c. The Fowler brothers, doubtless affected by their experiences at the front in the First World War, illustrated this use in the first edition of the Concise Oxford Dictionary with the gruesome example He came back minus an arm; arm was changed to dog in a later edition.

Modern English usage. 2014.
